About US
In 1979, a young man of 27 from Minuwangoda, Deshamanya Dinayadura Somachandra De Silva, set forth on a humble journey with just a BMC lorry and Rs. 6,000 in hand. He ferried coconuts and pineapples to Jaffna and brought back dried fish, chilies and onions to Negombo, learning the rhythms of trade from his father, lessons that would later form the bedrock of his remarkable journey as a visionary entrepreneur.
With perseverance and the wisdom gained from those early struggles, he opened “Calton Stores” in 1983, starting with only six devoted employees. Known for opening at dawn, closing late at night and treating every customer with genuine warmth and respect, the store soon became a beloved name in Negombo. Swift service and dependable home delivery won hearts and trust, laying the foundation for what was to come.
As Negombo blossomed into a bustling hub of tourism and commerce, Calton expanded alongside it. In 1990, the “Calton Bakery” was born to meet the growing appetite for fresh, high-quality food. What began as a modest corner bakery gradually became one of Sri Lanka’s most cherished food brands, celebrated for honest quality, fresh flavors, and friendly service that made every visit feel personal.
The story continued in 2007 with the opening of “Calton Hypermarket” offering customers a modern shopping experience with variety and convenience under one roof. Over the years, the group ventured into new horizons, including Q Bond cladding and CCM Agro, contributing meaningfully to Sri Lanka’s agriculture and construction sectors.
More than three decades on, Calton still serves families across the nation with the same values that ignited its journey, unwavering dedication, trust, and heartfelt care for every customer.
